Research interests


My research interests lie in the areas of (historical) sociolinguistics, pragmatics, stylistics,
discourse analysis, and language variation in general,
with a focus on ​Irish English.
I use Corpus Linguistics techniques to analyse
language in context.

​Research


My research is mainly in the field of Irish English, including books, articles and book chapters on literary dialect, pragmatic/discourse markers, language and emigration, and the use of corpora to investigate language in context.

I have been involved in different research projects dealing with historical linguistics, intercultural communication, language and identity, teaching in the multicultural classroom, language teaching, and student mobility. ​

My work includes collaboration with various colleagues. Over the last few years I have worked with Prof. Kevin McCafferty on the Corpus of Irish English Correspondence, a project originally funded by the Norwegian Research Council.

I am a member of the Steering Committee of the Irish English Network: https://www.irish-english.net/ and am part of the Steering Committee of NARNiHS, the North American Research Network in Historical Sociolinguistics. 

Teaching

I teach modules on the History of the English Language, English Sociolinguistics, Language Variation in English, and
​Corpus Linguistics  at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

I became Professor of English Linguistics at the University of Bergen in 2020, and I have held different teaching positions at the English Department, University of Extremadura (Spain), and the Department of Languages and Cultural Studies at the University of Limerick (Ireland).

I was also lecturer in Hiberno-English in the English Department at University College Dublin (Ireland).

Consulting

and I have been invited to review, assess, consult or examine for:

I am currently evaluator of the European Commission, and the ACSUG (Galician Agency for Quality Assurance at University).
